Departments - English

Exam Results

Our Key Stage 3 SATs results were excellent again this year with 67% of pupils gaining a Level 5 or above. This is a new record for the department! It reflects the hard work and dedication of both pupils and staff throughout the year.

Welcome

We are pleased to welcome Mr Murden, our new Head of Department. He joins us from Our Lady’s in Blackley and brings plenty of experience and new ideas. We also welcome Miss Grundy to the department. She has worked with the EAZ previously and is now teaching English.

Booster Classes

The Department will be running ‘Coursework Clinics’ and ‘Booster classes’ at both KS3 and 4 to help pupils achieve the best possible grades for their efforts. These will prove vital in gaining those all important extra marks come exam time! Last year’s attendees all did well in their exams.

Drama Club

The new Drama Club is starting to express itself and develop pupil’s understanding of theatre. Pupils are already looking forward to taking part in the RSC’s ‘Shakespeare Festival’ in February 2007

Theatre in school

GCSE pupils are looking forward to seeing a production of Stienbeck’s ‘Of Mice and Men’ in December. They will also be able to quiz the actors about the story at a ‘Workshop’ after the performance. Later in the year we hope to take Year 9 pupils to see a production of Shakespeare’s ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ in time to help them with their SATs preparation.

Reading Club

As a ‘Reading Connects’ school, we recognise the importance of a whole school reading structure. Our aim is to develop reading for pleasure across every strand of school life. We have already gathered as a group of reading enthusiasts to get the club off the ground.

We have also interviewed teachers; some enjoy romantic novels, fantasy adventures or true crime stories whilst others prefer fascinating facts from newspapers, journals and magazines. We have discovered that there are many different reasons for the choices people make about what they read; but there is always one thing in common - a good read!

Reading for pleasure improves our academic success as well as enhancing our lives.

Refurbishment

The Department is about to undergo a refurbishment with the installation of a new computer suite in G7. This will benefit future pupils greatly.
